IOE Students’ Union Proposed Environmental Policy Statement (Draft)

IOE Students’ Union Proposed Environmental Policy Statement (Draft)

The Bloomsbury Colleges are committed to the responsible use of energy, water and other resources with the aim of minimising any negative impacts on the environment whilst maintaining operational goals and an acceptable working/living environment for staff and students.

The Students’ Union is committed to supporting the IOE in achieving these goals, working towards continuous improvement in environmental performance and achieving best practice benchmark standards for Student Union establishments wherever practicable. This includes meeting, and where possible exceeding, all relevant environmental legislative and other requirements.

To this end the SU will provide senior level commitment, an appropriate management structure and cost-effective resources to achieve these standards which will contribute to environmental improvement and long term sustainability in the SU and institute as a whole.

This includes:

1. Supporting the IOE to implement a formal environmental management system and controls ensuring that the environmental aspects of the SU are accounted for and providing a rep for the sustainability network. This includes completing site audits to ensure best use of resources and using these to lobby the IOE into action

2. reducing the use of natural resources and the emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) using recycled paper and not providing bottled water in meetings, promoting the Switch It Off campaign and establishing a policy for equipment in the bar regarding who is responsible for switching off.

3. promoting environmentally responsible procurement of goods and services including recycled paper, selling and promoting Fair Trade products with stickers and posters.

4. minimising waste production and reducing the environmental consequences of waste through re-use and re-cycling. This includes making best use and promoting IOE recycling facilities, engaging students to support initiatives for re-use and recycling

5. encouraging the IOE in avoiding or limiting wherever practical the use of environmentally damaging substances, materials and processes

6. preventing pollution where possible and reducing pollution through the responsible management of toxic, chemical and hazardous waste (not required for our SU but required for the international environmental management system standard ISO14001)

7. minimising any adverse environmental impact of new development such as the green space above the IOESU bar

8. recognising the benefit of green spaces and working to enhance the ecological value of the estate. Working with the IOE to green the estate wherever possible to provide a better environment for students and promote biodiversity.

9. communicating within the IOE Bloomsbury Colleges and to the outside community on environmental performance and best practice

The SU will support specific policies and targets within the IOE including the IOESU Green Society and assist with promoting the Green Thing Campaign through regular updates via email, FaceBook, Twitter, the Sub TV plasma screens and the IOESU website.

This policy is available to staff, students, and the community and will be part of a broader campaign to promote awareness and understanding of environmental issues.
This policy will be reviewed annually. The IOESU Office Administrator is responsible for ensuring compliance with this policy, supported by the IOE Sustainability Network.
