What your SU is doing to build a sustainable environment

THE IOE SU Waste Campaign 2012

This year the IOE SU is committed to reducing landfill. We will be running a campaign on waste reduction over the year and welcome any suggestions you may have for reducing landfill, or for re-using, repurposing or recycling. We encourage everyone to think before they throw something in the bin.

Initiatives:

• Save 10p on hot drinks in the SU Bar, in the cafe and at Costa Coofee on Level 3 if you bring your own cup

• The SU will no longer be buying plastic bags to use in the shop. Students are welcome to bring in any unused carrier bags for re-use.
The waste hierarchy states that you should always try to reduce the amount of waste material you generate in preference to reusing it or recycling it.
Every year, an estimated 17.5 billion plastic bags are given away by supermarkets. This is equivalent to over 290 bags for every person in the UK.

• Students are also invited to bring in any unused printer cartridges, used batteries and postage stamps, unwanted books or old mobile phones and drop them off at the new re-use, re-purpose and re-cycle centre in the SU.

• The IOE have established a new waste system which will make recycling easier. Look out for the new bins in the IOE which will help to further reduce landfill

• We shall be setting up a swap shop where students can leave items they no longer require

• We are working on showing students how they can highlight the option to print on both sides of paper, use scrap paper as notebook etc and the green society will be lobbying the library on having these options set as the default. We will also be looking at ensuring all departments allow electronic submissions of assignments where possible.

• The People’s supermarket, a local shop and group will be coming in to have a stall over the Green Week and show students how to make dinner from food approaching it's use-by date that would otherwise go to waste.
