Sustainability at the IOE

This year IOESU is focusing on improving its sustainability practices and contributing to overall sustainability throughout the IOE. We are actively involved in the Green Impact Awards accreditation scheme offered by NUS (http://www.nus.org.uk/greenimpactunions), and we have partnered with the Bloomsbury Green Thing team and IOE to work towards a set of actions that will raise awareness of good sustainability practices and contribute to reducing our carbon footprint. But the most important way that we can reach our shared goals is by working together.

The Green Thing is a shared initiative across the Bloomsbury Colleges (Birkbeck, The Institute of Education, The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, The School of Oriental and African Studies, The School of Pharmacy). This includes monitoring our impact on the environment, implementing technical solutions to improve environmental performance and encouraging more sustainable behaviours in all staff and students. This includes reducing the use of energy and water, minimising waste by thinking about what we buy and reusing things where we can, and making sustainable choices for travel such as cycling and public transport. We can all get involved so we want to encourage all staff and students to join our campaign to do the Green Thing.

Get Involved

At the University we need to cut 20% off our Carbon footprint by 2015. But to do this we really need your help. The energy we use in residences, at home and at university depends on what each of us does. Right now we are looking for Carbon and Green Champions to help – whether it’s putting up posters in halls, switching stuff off or anything that will help cut emissions.
Would you like to help cut Carbon in your Hall, be a part of the IOESU Green Society or help in some other way? Let’s work together and inspire others to do the Green Thing!

If you want to get involved –become a volunteer representing the Green Thing Team and encourage students to sign up for various groups and activities, i.e. Student Green Groups, Newsletter, student energy saving initiative (for students living at the halls of residence). We will provide you with all the promotional material and any support you need.
Send us an e-mail to greenthing@bloomsbury.ac.uk to express your interest and find out more.

A number of students have indicated their interest in getting involved with the IOESU Environmental Society, and there is also interest in a Gardening Society. For more information on how you can be a part of an IOE sustainability society, contact Susan McGrath at s.mcgrath@ioe.ac.uk.

For more information about how you can get involved in any of the above projects contact Shana at S.Tufail@ioe.ac.uk
